NOTES:

Monte Skinner: People would just name a lake, put a sign up and the forest service came through and used that name. Now they’ve taken all the signs down.

Finis Mitchell: Whenever we stocked a lake with fish, we had to name it for the records.

Janet Montgomery: In the 1970s subdivisions were put in without road names. Mary Lankford, Betty Wyatt and myself from the Assessor’s Office used a theme for each subdivision. For example: Green River Ranches by the Warren Bridge has Indian Chief names, Redstone Upper Green subdivsion has all trout names, Mountain View Ranches on Forty Rod has geological features of mountains, and Thunder north of Merna has storm and cloud names. Now the developer names the roads.

Timely Info: The USGS place names website is www.geonames.usgs.gov. Then Query. If there is a BGN number (Board on Geographic Names) it means there is a file which may have the origin of the name (in Denver or Reston, Virginia).
